I write thought-provoking stories with messages of resilience, persistence, compassion, courage, and growth for parents to read and talk about with their elementary-school-age children.
The characters in these stories are carefully crafted role models for children who are learning to weather and grow from the ups and downs of normal life.
North Star Stories is a place for parents and children who are looking for engaging storylines to underpin lessons about facing challenges, creative problem solving, and demonstrating strength and compassion under pressure.
Today's children benefit less from a strict set of rules for correct behavior, and more from a set of family-held values and principles to guide them when they face a challenge. I want children to imagine themselves in the world of my characters, feel their feelings, know their struggles. And when they face their own challenges, the characters will be there, whispering messages of strength, compassion, and resilience.
"He needed a story about a kid who gets up every day and faces down the twists and turns of normal life and grows into his best self through courage and the steady support of the people who care about him."
I'm a parent with one real audience member--my first grade son. Our family weathered transition and loss steadily for 4 years, so I know what it's like to see your child face one challenge after another. When his struggles came to a head, I turned to books to guide him--but though we love reading together, I couldn't find what I was looking for. I wanted gentle stories of courageous characters who have no villain to defeat on the outside. He didn't need a story about beating a bad guy, he needed a story about a kid who gets up every day and faces down the twists and turns of normal life and grows into his best self through courage and the steady support of the people who care about him.
